Tan Ajahn Mun is one of the most respected and well-known meditation masters of the Thai forest tradition of the last century.
This biography, written by the also highly esteemed Ajahn Maha Boowa, gives a valuable glimpse into his life and practice. It is a fierce work that shows how much effort is needed to liberate te mind, and at the same time a work full of bizarre and miraculous events that are all the more powerful because of the no-nonsense attitude of Tan Ajahn Mun himself.
It is striking that Tan Ajahn Mun emphatically practiced samatha meditation before engaging in insight (vipassanā). Another book (titled “Patipada”) on the practice of Tan Ajah Mun even shows that he practiced samatha meditation on buddho. People who claim that he practiced and taught vipassanā should read this work carefully.
In addition to Tan Ajahn Mun, part of the life of Tan Ajahn Sao, another great monk in the Buddhist tradition, who also taught samatha meditation on buddho.
