Arthur Braverman is an American author, translator, and Zen Buddhist practitioner born on December 8, 1942, in the Bronx, New York. He began his serious engagement with Zen in Japan, where he lived for seven years, studying at the Antai-ji temple from 1969 to 1975 under the guidance of Kosho Uchiyama Roshi. Upon returning to the United States in 1978, he furthered his academic understanding of the tradition by studying classical Japanese at Columbia University.
Braverman is best known for his translations and writings that make Zen teachings accessible to English-speaking audiences. His translated works include Mud and Water: The Collected Teachings of Zen Master Bassui and Warrior of Zen: The Diamond-Hard Wisdom Mind of Suzuki Shosan. In addition to non-fiction, he has written Living and Dying in Zazen and the historical novel Dharma Brothers: Kodo and Tokujoo. He currently resides in Ojai, California, with his wife.
